Teaching with OPNET: Quality of Service of Communication Systems

First, systems where efforts were taken to obtain quality of service are introduced. (like Integrated Services, Differentiated Services, ATM, MPLS, GPRS, UMTS, streaming, policing and scheduling). Then, different methods for designing and evaluating systems are discussed: measurement (HW-, SW-, hybrid-monitoring, benchmarks, performance tests), analytical modeling (queueing models, stochastic processes, Petri-nets) and simulation (OPNET, ns2, formal description techniques).
Additionally, an introduction to Network Calculus, a method to determine guaranteed bounds for QoS parameters, is presented.
All methods are demonstrated using internet protocol examples.

Teaching with OPNET: Simulation and Modeling I

Overview of the various kinds of simulation, discrete simulation (computational concepts, simulation of queuing systems, simulation in Java, professional simulation tools), required probability concepts and statistics, modeling paradigms (e.g., event/process oriented, queuing systems, Petri nets, UML statecharts), input modeling (selecting input probability distributions), random number generation (linear congruential generators and variants, generating random variates), output analysis (warm-up period detection, independent replications, result presentation), continuous and hybrid simulation (differential equations, numerical solution, hybrid statecharts), simulation software, case studies, parallel and distributed simulation.
